We Will

Sprint to set our defense

Execute our defense with multiple efforts to completion

Be strong to and strong on the ball

Play unselfishly with SPACE and PACE to create great chances

Dominate with our EFFORT plays

Monday

The only way

to maximize potential for performance

is to be calm in the mind.

Striking a more proper balance between physical effort and mental effort is the biggest challenge facing United States Soccer.  We need to develop players who are both poised on the ball and creative problem solvers. This will require a greater an emphasis on training the brain.

Improvement

As a group we talk about the concept of practicing with a purpose and not confusing effort with results. We can go out and exhaust ourselves with our effort thinking we accomplished something along the way, but maybe all we really accomplished was to tire ourselves out.

We have to go out and practice with a purpose. If we are going to improve our first touch today, then we must collectively and cooperatively work together towards that end. If that is our purpose, that is what we will achieve. It is the concept of progress, of making steady improvement each time we take the field. It is the knowledge we hold at the end of the day that through purposeful effort we have gotten better individually and collectively.

This requires honesty and accountability to yourself and to one another. At the end of the day you must be able to look at yourself and know that you gave your best effort. You need to be able to look into your teammates eyes and have them know you cut no corners, that you paid attention to the smallest of details, that you gave them your best effort. Only when this honesty and accountability to yourself and to one another exists does true improvement occur.

Monday

You have choices. Choose wisely or there will be consequences.

I find it difficult to write tonight.  I have spent a good portion of my day on the phone with two coaching colleagues.  Both are facing disciplinary issues with players between the end of their regular seasons and their first tournament game. Both issues involve substance abuse.

We know it is out there.

It is present on every high school team.

You are only kidding yourself if you believe it is not.

The quality of an individuals play is determined by the quality of their decision making in the game.

The team that will win is the team who makes the most good decisions

More importantly, the quality of your life is dependent on the quality of the decisions you make.  Two of these young people had college scouts in pursuit of them.  Big time college coaches. They have likely thrown away the opportunity to play on the big stage AND a chance to obtain a free or steeply discounted college education.

Their coaches and teammates are left to deal with the consequences of the poor decisions these players made.

My prayers are with the offending players and their families. I am hopeful these situations will be dealt with in as positive of a manner as possible, that lasting lessons are learned. These are not bad kids. They made mistakes. They need to deal with the consequences of their poor decisions then regroup and move on.  Best of luck to each of you.

I’m not the strongest,
I’m not the fastest,
I’m not the most athletic,
but if I can think this game
and be one step ahead of everybody else,
it will put me in the right positions
to make plays
and influence the game for my team.

because his first two yards were in his head."

The Difference Between Teams

The Difference

Between Teams

is in the

Details.

It really is that simple. The team that wins the game is the team that pays the best attention to the details of their process.  Great teams are good at the little things.  Poor teams tend to overlook the small details that betray their play. It might be considered that we are talking about discipline. In a manner of speaking, we are. This makes the identification of the details, what it is we will be disciplined about, one of the most important processes a team undertakes. Therefore, it is also fair to say the difference between coaches is in the details. It is essential to a teams success that the coach properly identifies the process and communicates it concisely and clearly to the team.
