The Second Team

In my day they were called second string. Second team, second unit, it doesn't really matter what the designation for these players is.  What is important is the vital role these players play on winning teams.

There can be no question starters play a key role in a teams performance, but so too does a team's substitutes. Players on the second unit may not often be directly responsible for winning goals, but they also cannot be responsible for allowing game winning goals.
So what do substitutes need to bring to their teams when their chance to play comes?

1) First and foremost they have to bring incredible energy. Not out of control overly aggressive energy, but hustle play energy and the enthusiasm that comes with it.  Make an immediate POSITIVE impact on the game.

2)  Defense.  Substitutes must play with an extremely high competence and execution level within a teams defensive system.  They must defend with both confidence and a sense of urgency.

3)   They use their fresh legs and energy to pressure the opponents.  Get stops on defense and then transition fast and furious to attack understanding that expending opponents energy is a vital role they fill.

4) Limited but effective touches on the ball.  There must be an understanding energy and pace of play are key ingredients to what substitutes bring to the game. Playing fast isn't always about physical speed. Having good touches on the ball is important, but do not fear making a mistake. Just focus on maximizing the effectiveness of the touches you do receive.

5) Effective substitutes understand, embrace and take pride in their individual role.  Regardless of their position, substitutes defend. They also understand the overall positional responsibilities of where they will be playing and do their best to uphold the expectations for the position.

6) Collectively the second unit should be so productive as to create their own identity.  They should be known for their energy and aggressive defense.  Many second units earn nicknames for their productive play.

7) Substitutes should enter the game with a chip on their shoulder.  Their goal should be to play so well within their role that they earn coveted "crunch time" minutes due to their "hot" play. This can be achieved by embracing their individual and collective role and playing within themselves and within the teams philosophy and system.

Very few teams in any sport achieve championship status without the energetic supportive play of a competent bench. The bench must be developed and supportively embraced by the coaches, captains and starters. The role of the bench must not only be appreciated, but must be celebrated!
